Launch of Clinical Discussion Group

“I feel very privileged to be part of such a supportive, innovative and dynamic group of acupuncturists”

I’ve not written any posts recently as I have been rather caught up in helping to develop an online group for clinical discussion and study. There is a group of us under mentoring from Dr Hung Tran and my colleague and I thought it would be useful to create an online arena where we could discuss the material, present cases and explore each other’s questions.

One of our member works within educational development in higher education and so we are very lucky to have his expertise in helping to formulate the structure for the group. We have come up with a structure that encourages us to focus on a particular theme in each meeting and to present our points for discussion beforehand. Rather than just turning up and having a chat, this allows us to explore the topics in question beforehand so that our discussion can be more productive.

We had our first meeting this week. As the organiser, I was a little worried no one would turn up but happily most of our group was able to make it. My colleague chaired the discussion, modelling expert group facilitation skills. Learning from him, we intend to have a rotation of meeting facilitators in the future.

Many of our group attended Ann Cecil-Sterman’s recent weekend seminar on the Divergent Channels of acupuncture. This study group meeting was to discuss new learning and questions arsing from that seminar. Ann’s lecture was so rich with information and insight that I came up with pages of material that I wanted to explore further with my colleagues. I tried to cut it down but it still might have been a bit overwhelming for the first meeting. Apologies to my colleagues, I promise to reign it in for future sessions!

Thank you to everyone helping to create this wonderful online space. Dr Hung Tran, who kindly attended and was on hand to offer his wisdom and experience. Ray Rose Raymond, for his expertise in educational development. To all my amazing mentoring colleagues, for their contributions and for their patience as we develop this process. We have a unique opportunity to take our professional development to a higher level and I feel very privileged to be part of such a supportive, innovative and dynamic group of acupuncturists.
